For many high school students, part of the excitement of college is the opportunity to leave home and experience something new. The idea of starting fresh in a new place is energizing and, for many, an important part of growing up.
But here’s something I encourage every student and family to consider carefully: having at least one strong local college option on your application list is not a step backward, it’s a smart and strategic decision.
This could be your in-state flagship university, a regional state college, or even a community college with strong transfer pathways. I say this especially to students who feel certain they want to “get out of here.” Having a local option doesn’t limit you. Instead, it gives you flexibility, security, and more control over your future, no matter what happens.
Life has a way of surprising us. Plans evolve. Priorities shift. Having a local acceptance already in place makes it much easier to adjust if needed, rather than starting from scratch during an already stressful time.
Here are five important reasons why every student should include a strong local option.
1. Cost Savings Can Be Significant
In-state colleges often provide substantial tuition savings compared to out-of-state options. In addition, many students find that dual enrollment or early college credits transfer more easily to in-state public institutions.
This doesn’t mean out-of-state schools are always more expensive — scholarships and financial aid can change the equation — but having an affordable, high-quality local option provides an important financial safety net.
Reducing student loan burden gives students more freedom and flexibility after graduation.
2. Local Connections Can Open Doors to Internships and Opportunities
College is about more than coursework. Internships, part-time jobs, and hands-on experiences play a major role in career development.
Attending college near home can make it easier to leverage existing relationships and networks. Family connections, community contacts, and local familiarity can help students find valuable opportunities that strengthen résumés and build confidence.
These early professional experiences often make a significant difference when it comes time to apply for full-time jobs.

3. Flexibility if Plans Change
Even with thoughtful planning, students sometimes realize a school isn’t the right fit or life circumstances shift unexpectedly.
Having already applied and been accepted to a local college makes transitions much smoother if needed. Whether due to financial considerations, personal reasons, or simply discovering a better fit closer to home, having that option available removes unnecessary stress.
This isn’t about expecting things to go wrong. It’s about preparing wisely so students always have choices.
4. The Comfort of Home Still Matters More Than You Think
Independence is exciting, but the transition to college also comes with many new responsibilities.
Simple things:
laundry, meals, and familiar routines, suddenly require more effort and time. Being within reach of home can provide valuable support during this transition, especially during the first year.
Parents also appreciate having opportunities to stay connected and support their students as they grow into their independence.

5. Familiar Support Systems Help Students Thrive
Even the best campus dining halls can’t replace the comfort of home entirely. Beyond meals, students benefit from having access to people who know and support them best.
Whether it’s a quick visit home, a familiar place to recharge, or simply knowing that support is nearby, local options can provide a sense of stability during a time of major life change.
This foundation often helps students grow in confidence and independence over time.
A Smart Plan Includes Strong Options, Not Just Dream Schools
Building a balanced college list is about creating opportunities, not limiting them.
Your school counselor can help identify strong local colleges that align with your academic goals and interests. Many local colleges also offer application fee waivers for in-state students, making it even easier to apply.
Having a local option doesn’t mean you won’t go far. It simply means you’re making thoughtful decisions that keep doors open.
Students who plan this way give themselves the greatest flexibility and the greatest chance of finding the college experience that truly fits them best.
